It would be easy—perhaps even understandable—for people to give up and leave. Many families have relocated to safer cities like Jos. Yet those who remain insist that Hurti is their home, and that is where they intend to rebuild. "If there is security, people will farm. If they farm, they can live. Farming is our wealth," said a local leader. That resolve deserves to be met with more than sympathetic words. It calls for action.

Coordinated Relief for Hurti

In response to the tragedy, The Platform Foundation mobilised quickly. Our team, working alongside local leaders, identified the most immediate needs: food, clothing, shelter materials etc. We prepared prayer cards, comforting messages and volunteers ready to sit with grieving families and listen to their stories. Contacts on the ground confirmed that calm had returned and access into Hurti was possible, so we organised a relief convoy.

On arrival, the atmosphere was a mix of sorrow and determination. Villagers stood amid the ruins of burnt houses and barns; children clung to their parents; elders recalled loved ones lost. Our first priority was to make sure no one went hungry. Volunteers distributed bags of maize, rice and beans etc. For those who escaped with little more than the clothes on their backs, we brought blankets, clothing and hygiene kits. 

Beyond material aid, we offered something equally important: presence. In times of loss, a compassionate ear can help people begin to heal. Foundation staff and volunteers shared prayers, listened to stories and affirmed that the villagers are not alone. We delivered prayer cards written by supporters from all over the world. For many recipients, these tangible expressions of solidarity brought comfort and hope.

Next Steps: Building for the Long Term

Relief work is just the beginning. The community's long-term security and self‑sufficiency depend on rebuilding farms and homes and restoring livelihoods. That is why our relief packages can also included seeds and simple farming tools—so that as the rainy season approaches, farmers can plant again. We are working with local leaders to provide roofing materials for homes and to help rebuild storage barns. 

Our safe house project, originally planned to serve vulnerable families, may expanded to include Hurti. This facility will provide temporary shelter for displaced families and a base for vocational training programs aimed at diversifying income beyond subsistence farming. We are also exploring partnerships to supply fertiliser, medicine and educational materials. The goal is not just to restore what was lost but to support a stronger, more resilient community.
